10.11.2030. Selva? Real or imagined...
In The Disciples of Goedric Trilogy, Selva is the name of a remote ranch owned by a couple of gay bears named Jon and Santiago who left the United States many years ago to start fresh in Mexico. As the story infolds, young Etan is sent to Selva to keep him out of the clutches of the IFC--a mega-corporation controlled by a handful of powerful men who will stop at nothing to get him back under their control.
While Selva does not yet exist, it was based upon a real location located along the Ameca River between the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. It has always been a dream of mine to help create a place where LGBT people could go to be themselves as they work to discover their inner voices and their own forms of creative expression. I believe that we all have a spark inside us that needs to create. For some, creating life and raising children helps to fill this need--for others, the beauty inside them finds a different sort of outlet.
A number of years ago I was lucky enough to purchase a beautiful 200 acre property that was tucked away in the jungles of Nayarit in the coastal foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The property gave the illusion of being hundreds of miles from civilization and yet was less than an hour's drive to the busy streets and shopping malls of Puerto Vallarta. The first time I hiked up the trails and entered the thick of jungle, I knew that my dream was one step closer to coming true.
Unfortunately, having the land and actually constructing an institute are beasts of a different temperament--especially with the world's economy spinning out of control. Nevertheless, my eye is never off the ball and the proceeds from my writing, as well as some of my other projects, are being tucked away to help bring Selva to life. With any luck at all, I will be able to host a writer's retreat in the next couple of years--a small first step. In truth, the Mexican vaqueros are already eagerly awaiting to saddle the horses.
In the meanwhile, there are some photo galleries below that you might enjoy browsing through. If nothing else, they might help bring Selva--the jungle oasis that Etan Reyes Llamas calls home--into better focus.
One last thing... my little dream aside, there really is very large track of land in the remote jungles of the Sierra Madre's, adjacent to a jaguar preserve along the Ameca River--just like in The Disciples of Goedric. I am sure you won't mind if I keep its exact location to myself for the time being--just in case an urgent need should ever arises...
